Velzy V-Fin Noserider
In 1954 a lot of surfers were getting pretty stoked about nose-riding. We were riding Balsa Boards that didn't have much rocker so unless you were really in the curl, it was kinda hard to stay on the tip. I started playing around with fin design - I wanted to move the trim point further forward so we could stay on the nose longer - I came up with this split-fin design that we called the V-FIN. As far as I know, it was the only fin that had been designed just for nose-riding.
As it turned out, it was more than just a nose-riding fin. It helped the guy just starting out progress faster with the basics. the V-FIN gave him lots of stability with nice, smooth turns and it made it easier to ride the nose. The more advanced surfers were using it to pull off some really radical stuff -- snappy top turns on smaller waves and real powerful bottom turns on larger waves -- stuff they wouldn't even try on their single fins -- and they were just powering through white water sections that they used to straighten out for. I'm not saying they always made the wave, but this fin would give you that little bit of confidence, so you'd take a chace and try to punch around the section instead of backin' off of it. I rode it in some 12' plus sessions in the Islands and some monster days at the Redondo Beach Breakwater.
This fin worked so well that I was swamped with orders. Surfers from Hermosa, Manhattan, Malibu, San Onofre, Wind'N'Sea, and even Hawaii thought the V-FIN was just bitchin'! The only drawback was how much time went into making each one. I was shaping the boards and I was shaping the fins. It took two fins for every board - they had to be hand shaped out of wood and then glassed on the board. It was just too much work to keep up with the demand.
Over the years I've kept refining the design - modifyng the template, reducing the area, and improving the foil - and looking for a better way to make them. Now, with the help of Surftech, I've finally gotten this thing right! The new V-Fin is laminated fiberglass - it's light, it's sleek, it's strong, and it's set up to fit any fin box.
I'M REAL PROUD OF THIS FIN - IT WORKS!
